About This Course
This one-day instructor-led course is intended for Microsoft Project users that need to manage a schedule but will NOT be managing cost within Project. By focusing only on the SCHEDULING capabilities of Project, this course dramatically simplifies this powerful application, thus the name: Tame Microsoft Project!
In addition to the student manual, this course uses a Project Template (.mpp) and additional tabs to the Ribbon, both of which simplify the interface for the user.
This course is intended for Project users who need to use Microsoft Project to create schedules with clear task responsibility and to regularly update those plans with schedule progress information, but who DO NOT use the cost management or resource allocation views of Microsoft Project. The audience for this course could be people managing large or small projects, part-time teams or dedicated teams, and people who are new to Project.
At Course Completion
- Initiate an Microsoft Project plan by correctly recording Project Information and configuring the Project Calendar.
- Create a project schedule that highlights task dependencies and the critical path.
- Assign task responsibility to specific people or organizations.
- Easily update task status to show whether a project is on schedule.
- Modify a project schedule in response to changes in the project, while maintaining a record of the original plan for comparison.
- Produce schedule reports for management and customers.
- There are no pre-requisites for this class.
Module 1: Introduction to Microsoft Project
This module explains how Microsoft Project reinforces project management best practices and provides an introduction to the User Interface (UI) and the custom Ribbon that is a key component in this course.

Lab 1: No Lab exercises for Module 1
- Describe how Project relates to the discipline of project management.
- Navigate to the primary views available using the Ribbon.
- Choose views that display task, resource, or assignment information.
- Select tables within views to change the information that is available to see and edit.

Module 2: A Quick and Easy Overview of Managing with Project
This module demonstrates the major steps of managing a project using Microsoft Project. Students will create a new project plan, establish a baseline, and track progress. This module provides a brief experience with many features of Project without delving into detailed explanations in order to provide students the an overall understanding the purpose of Project and how it is used.

Lab 1: Creating a Basic Project from the Tame Template

Module 3: Setting up a Project
This module explains how to begin a new project using the Tame Template. The Tame Templet is pre-configured to make entering tasks easy and it includes custom views for updating a project once the work begins. Starting a new project also includes configuring the Project Calendar to reflect the work schedule of the team.

Module 7: Making Detailed Task Estimates
This module explains how to estimate the duration for a task and to assign the estimate and one or more resources to a task. Project uses three “Task Types” and each will be described, although Tame Microsoft Project! only recommends using the Fixed Duration task type.
